It’s August, which means it’s time for Austen In August! The 5th Annual Austen In August event is hosted by Adam of Roof Beam Reader. This is a month full of — you’ve probably guessed — all things Jane Austen! Her novels, biographies, film adaptations, graphic novels, you name it.
I’m kicking off the month reading Emma.
Also on my TBR list for this month are:
- Jane Austen for Beginners by Robert G. Dryden with Illustrations by Joe Lee (For Beginners, 2012). I spotted this at the Book Club Bookstore & More when I was browsing on Saturday and thought it would be a nice resource to have. It seems a gentle introduction to Austen’s life and her novels. It ends with a chapter on Jane Austen in Popular Culture — lists of film adaptations, spinoff books, online resources, and a bibliography for further reading.
- Mr. Darcy, Vampyre by Amanda Grange (Sourcebooks Landmark, 2009). Also spotted this at the Book Club Bookstore & More (thanks, Cynde!). I usually like my vampires to be mean and nasty rather than romantic, but I thought it might be fun to lighten up a bit.
- Jane Austen: A Brief Life by Fiona Stafford (Yale University Press, 2017). This one is hot off the press! It was just released on July 25, 2017. When the publicist asked if I’d be interested in reading it, my answer was an enthusiastic yes, please.
I’ll probably also watch a few movie adaptations this month. I love both the BBC and the Keira Knightly versions of Pride and Prejudice, as well as Emma Thompson’s Sense and Sensibility.

Boy, August really crept up on me this year. I still have some books from A in A 2 years ago to read – maybe I should start with those!
My favorite Austen is Pride and Prejudice. I haven’t seen the Keira Knightly version yet, so maybe watching that would be good too.

I know, this year is flying by! So far P&P and Persuasion are my favorites. The Keira Knightly version has some fabulous landscape shots and is so visually rich. Judi Dench is hands down my favorite Lady Catherine.

i read it years ago. started off well but became too light for my tastes
I thought it was pretty good but it’s been about 10 years since I read it. Booker’s right in that it’s a lot fluffier than you might expect.
I’ve just finished Lady Susan and hope to watch Love & Friendship now. I also love Emma Thompson’s S&S. My favourite P&P is the 1980’s BBC version and I love the Peter Firth /Robert Hardy Northanger Abbey. Paltrow’s Emma is a fav too. I know that some don’t like Amanda Root’s take on Persuasion, but it’s my preferred version to date.
I’ve yet to see a Mansfield Park that I like.

My favorite Austen so far is Northanger Abbey. I still have Persuasion and Mansfield Park left to read, And at my pace, I will probably read each of those in the two succeeding Augusts. (Let’s hope Austen in August keeps on going because that’s when I read Jane.)
This year for A in A I read Emma and REALLY liked it. My review is up, (though I consider my posts just my thoughts, not a formal review.)
